Spring 2017: Sheer, Light and White
New York, September 2016: Just looking through some of New York Fashion Week's Spring 2017 collections, it is evident that many designers have reverted to friendlier silhouettes, and less of the size restricting and body-hugging formulas of seasons past. None of the cabalistic and heavy concepts for the shows, but rather, the muse seems to have journeyed just to the next subway stop and not to some exotic region. The looks are somewhat familiar, approachable, and intelligible. Do I dare say, commercial? Well, that's not a bad thing, if it can indeed, clothe many! In a challenged economy (and distressed fashion industry), its better to create clothing that can bring back consumer confidence, so people may spend again. Spring 2017 is not at all less creative, but just a forthright hybrid of art and commerce.
White is probably the least surprising trend for spring, but this season's offerings are light, often gauzy, in imposing lengths and volume, to the delight of stain remover pens. From white maxi dresses at Oscar de la Renta and Zero + Maria Cornejo, to oversized boyfriend shirts at Rag & Bone and DKNY, these garments are spacious, airy and seemingly cling-free. Think Eileen Fisher's (cool) daughter, or Florence Welch but less vintage-y.
